Overlooked Ways of Caring for Teeth Post-Whitening

Woman with a toothbrushThroughout the United Kingdom, more and more patients seek to improve the appearance of their teeth. From whitening procedures to teeth alignment, dentists cater to the desires of their patients. In Hertfordshire, teeth whitening procedures are a common request, but many people forget they must take steps to care for their teeth after the procedure, too.

Should you have a teeth whitening procedure scheduled with your dentist soon, here’s how to care for your teeth once you are out of the dentist’s chair:

Avoid Food and Beverages That Stain the Teeth

Remember that some drinks and food we consume can stain the teeth, and avoiding them may be helpful in keeping your pearly whites longer. These beverages include tea, coffee and red wine. Don’t drink any of these for at least a few hours after the procedure. Of course, it may be difficult to stop drinking these altogether, but swishing some water after drinking them can help decrease their staining effects.

Keep Away from Food That Is Too Hot or Too Cold

You are subjecting your teeth to chemicals in the process of whitening them, and this may leave the teeth sensitive at least for a few days after the procedure. This sensitivity means you may feel some pain when you consume food and beverages that are too hot or too cold. Spare yourself the pain by avoiding extreme temperatures for the meantime.

Brush and Floss Regularly

Of course, to keep your mouth healthy and your smile shiny, these activities are a must. Do not neglect to brush, floss and use mouthwash just because your teeth look whiter at the moment. Plaque can still build up and ignoring the basics may put you back in the dentist’s chair all too soon – for entirely different reasons.
