It’s Just Been Three Months! Why Do I Need to Get My Toothbrush Replaced?

Although every toothbrush has its own lifespan, the rule of thumb is to replace yours once about every three months. So, make sure to regularly replace your bristles for a healthier and cleaner mouth.

Worn-Out Bristles Damage Teeth and Gums

Frequent usage wears the bristles of your toothbrush out. It could, in turn, irritate and inflame your teeth and gums each time you brush. A new toothbrush, with the nylon bristles cut to the same height and rounded, won’t scrape away enamel, your tooth’s soft protective covering, and gum tissue. Just make sure you don’t end up over-brushing: it could lead to sore gums and scratches on your gum line.

Old Brushes Are Prone to Bacterial Buildup

Your toothbrush can be a breeding ground for germs, fungus and bacteria if you don’t rinse the bristles thoroughly after every use. If you’ve been ill recently, ditch your old brush and buy a new one. This way, you could avoid reintroducing your mouth to viruses. Don’t underestimate the importance of storing your toothbrush in a proper place either. The loo can easily contaminate your toothbrush, especially if you have a habit of flushing with the lid up, so make sure not to keep yours anywhere near the toilet!

Old Toothbrushes Just Can’t Clean

After about three months, your toothbrush isn’t as effective as it was before. The splayed bristles bend in different places, making it hard to get into the nooks and crannies of your mouth and clean hard-to-reach cavities. That means that even if you still brush your teeth regularly, having an old, inefficient toothbrush defeats the purpose. So, get a new one to keep your teeth sparkly and clean.

Following the three-month rule for your toothbrush may seem pointless and tedious, but it could spell the difference between good oral health and getting periodontal or gum disease. If you want to improve on your overall oral health, replacing your brush every three months is a good place to start.
