India is the “Land of Spices”

No other nation in the world produces as many spices varieties as India. Seventy percent (70%) of the world’s spice variety is grown in the country. This explains the nickname, “Land of Spices”. There’s no doubt, their food has rich, distinct flavours.

Indians recognise 6 different flavours

Based on the Indian Food Theory, food has six different flavours, namely: sweet, salty, sour, bitter, astringent, and spicy. They say a proper meal for an Indian family should have all these flavours in balance, with only one or two standing out. Indian food fall into 3 categories

There are three classifications of food according to the Indian food system. These are Saatvic, Raajsic, and Taamsic. Saatvic refers to vegetables and juices and is believed to lead people to higher state of consciousness. Spicy and oily foods fall under Raajsic, which is known as the foundation of activity and motion. Taamsic refers to meat and liquor and is known to bring out negative feelings.

“Curry” technically means blend of spices

The word “curry” actually pertains to the blend of spices the Indians traditionally call garam masala. This typically includes black and white pepper, cloves, cumin, cardamom, cinnamon, and tamarind. Also, it is not used in all curry recipes. The mix is added to some dishes, along with other types of spices, making each dish unique in taste and aroma.
